The Nocturnian
The great part about art creation is the “a-Ha!” moments. When things connect and it feels like more than just this thing you decided to start one day. It becomes a thing you feel like others would enjoy and want to know all the lore of. I spoke a great deal about this project in the previous blog and how erratic and unorganized it has been. Thank you if you took the time to read through that chaos! Now we’re here and you see I have chosen to change the title to “The Nocturnian”. I was actually contemplating releasing this project under that same name, but I’m actually a bit indecisive about that. The Nocturnian is derived from my novel: “Lost in Nocturnia”, a story I have for years now tried to outline, write, etc. This music project is mostly its own thing, but it will dabble a bit in the lore of Lost in Nocturnia. I do enjoy the idea of having a side project in which I can truly experiment, but I believe I will be releasing this under “whereisspadey”. I’ll just be capturing the spirit of Lost in Nocturnia which is slight gothic, mythical and magic based. The music covers Alt R&B, Emo, Trip-hop and a bit of rap.
In a deep and darkened corner of Tumblr lays a blog I’ve been slowy curating with an aesthetic I deemed “Nocturnian”. These images range from greys, blacks, plenty nightly based subjects, black leather, goth styled, lace dressed subjects, black accessories, gothic designs, buildings and magical/ritualistic practices. It’s all things I felt were right on brand. So, for months, I was already building a place where I can visually get into the headspace of Nocturnian. I love collecting images that help me to feel a thing is tangible. I’ve been doing that practice since forever.
There’s particular timbres and nuances that make up the style of Nocturnian music. Back when I started it in 2015, I was chasing after these folklore styled phrases but with very particular synth sounds. I was recently trying to figure out how to verbally explain the mood of it. I only came up with basic words such as melancholy, majestic, blackened and eerie. You know it when you hear it. I’m honestly still trying to figure out exactly how to describe it.
I mentioned 9 tracks in the last post but now I have 10 tracks. I don’t imagine it going over that. I have one feature so far but there’s two others that I will be inquiring the particular artist about in the coming months.
I’m excited to have made this much progress so far. I will return with more things soon and likely share the “visual concept of the Nocturnian” over in my photo blog.
